Who is reading Half-Blood Prince ?

Who else in the Oracle Book Club is reading Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince ? I see Tanushree is. Who else? How far into the book are you? What surprised you the most? What did you hate the most? And what did you love about HBP?

No spoilers please :-D I am still reading the book. About 50% complete at this stage.

What surprised me most: How people could just seem to hook up and break up almost at random (case in point, Won-Won), even if they are teenagers!

What I hated: That Harry transitioned from the guy who beraks up Dumbledore's office to the guy who says "I am the chosen" one, without the readers getting to see even a glimpse of the transition.

What I loved: The HBP of course!!! This has always been my favourite character and I love how JKR has added so many more layers to this person.

Nice format Tanushree :-)

What surprised me the most:The identity of the HBP. I wasn't expecting it to be ______ (don't want to ruin it for those who haven't read it yet :-) But I must say that Rowling has done a fine job with this book.

What I hated:Not sure if I hate anything about this book :-)

What I loved:The ending!!! What will Harry do next? And how will he do it? Rowling has left even bigger question marks this time around than she did in any of the previous books.

I have to read the book again but I think I noticed a few discrepancies. Certain conversations between Harry, Ron and Hermione seem to have become known to Ginny and others. I remember frowning at some passages while reading but I can't remember the exact context now. A few other things also seem to have jumped out of context. Maybe I have missed something.

Overall an enjoyable read. Thanks Rowling.

And yes, Harry seems to grow up very fast between book 5 & 6. Also during his 6th year at school. The way he deals with the many issues he faces is a little surprising at first. After a while I had accepted the *new* Harry but Rowling still had a few more surprises left. Ron and Hermione seem to play a rather marginal role in this book, which was a little disappointing.

Now we wait for book 7 :-)

Spoiler Alert : Those who haven't completed the book yet, please don't read any further.

Here are my comments..

What surprised me the most:
The unexpected couples..Rowling introduced quite a good number of pairs. The Horcruxes..they remind me of the old indian folk stories i have read in my childhood. And finally the transformation of Harry from a gentle and affable kid to a strong and revengeful young man.Suddenly, his shyness has vanished and he shows more bravery. He was not as emotional as he was in HP5 when sirius was dead.

What I hated:Death of Dumbledore.A very pathetic death i would say.I have always loved this character for his apparent omniscience and the knack of getting out of tight spots. And after all the things he has done(He is supposed to be the only wizard Voldemort has ever feared..) he ended up weakened in a futile attempt, disarmed by sixteen year old and simply finished off like he were some common muggle by the person he trusted the most (and the character i hated the most).
Ron and Hermione doesn't seem to have any role in the plot too.

What I loved:The 'Biography' of Voldemort. This book almost covers the whole plot. And definitely, the last has to be a action packed and more serious book as the final one-on-one battle between voldemort and Harry is on the cards. But maybe we will miss Hogwarts and Quidditch!!

But overall, I have enjoyed it a lot..If only the death has been a more decent!

Well i was rather disappointed by the book...

I think JK did not carry out Harry's transition very well, suddenly hes all over the place threatening ppl (the malfoys), and shes overdone the teenage romances stuff.

I mean Harry doesnt do ANYTHING in the book...nor does any1 else. Even the last battle is narrated only after its over, something I was looking forward to (like the ones in HP5, i was hooked to the ministry fight)

The book obviously doesnt seem to end properly, everything is in a state of abeyance...

PLus, Harry doesnt grow as a wizard in this book....hes become stronger with each book, and hes definitely not strong enough yet. With dumbledore gone and him not coming back, I dont see ny1 but perhaps RAB who would mentor him and teach him some new spells...
