I haven't read any HP till now. All ye HP lovers, can you tell me if the hype surrounding it is really worth it? I mean, children staying up till midnight, waiting in the bookstores eagerly for the release, adults competing with kids to lay their hands on the book et al somehow sounds all too phony.
I would be glad to called wrong on this..

I don't know about the hype but I do love the Harry Potter books. I too didn't start reading them till the third book was out. But after reading the first one I went out and bought all the others. I am eagerly waiting for the 6th book. In fact I am rereading book 5 (Order of the Phoenix) to familiarize myself with the main events before I start book 6 (Half-Blood Prince).

J. K. Rowling has created a truely magical world for Potter and friends. She has the ability to bring her characters to life in a way that is reminiscent of Tolkien though she cannot yet hold a candle to Tolkien.

And yes, Harry Potter has appeal both for children and us (so called) adults.

I urge you to try the books. The best way is to start with book 1 and read them all in sequence. Remember that this is a series and reading them out of sequence will be confusing.

Have fun.
